MULTICHANNEL TRANSMISSOMETERS
For Continuous Coating (Converting) Industry

Dyn-Optics makes Multichannel Transmissometers for the continuous coating (converting) industry. These instruments have been used to measure the transmission of coatings at various wavelengths on substrates that range from glass to flexible films. The systems operate in the laboratory for quality control measurements after the coating has been applied or in the vacuum chamber for in-situ monitoring to control the application of the coating to assure compliance to specification.

The instrumentation consists of a sophisticated synchronously demodulated detection and amplifier system for maximum discrimination against spurious illumination and electronic noise. The instrument operates in full room light and maintains accuracy.

The instrument has an electronically chopped LED as the source of the illumination. The LED is a solid state emitter that is operated at derated power and has a long life. There are no moving parts. The Transmissometer can operate with the photopic spectral response of the eyes or other wavelengths when desired.

The transmissometer is simple to calibrate and use. For small values of transmission, the decade gain can be increased from X1 to X10 or X100.

Various applications include measuring transmission of:

  1. Visible transmitting and infrared reflecting film for heat reduction coating for windows.
  2. Polarizing film.
  3. Crossed polarizing film to verify the extinction ratio.
  4. Aluminized film used for bags for perishable food to increase shelf life.
  5. Metallic film for use in anti-static bags for electronic components.
  6. Film for magnetic tape.

The Model 54-4 Four Channel Transmissometer has measuring heads within the vacuum chamber and measures transmission of various coatings on flexible film in a continuous coating application. The four channels can be located across the film to measure uniformity of coating. Alternatively, one channel can measure transmission of an initial coating and the other three channels can measure uniformity across the film after a coating. In some applications, a computer can correct the desired transmission of the final coating to compensate for variations in the pre-coat. The instrument can measure the film in air or by means of fiber optics that can measure the transmission in a vacuum chamber. Transmissometers have been made with the number of channels varying from one to fourteen.
